The Dark Side of the Flute

HPO Principal Flutist Leslie Newman demonstrates a completely different side to flute playing with her performance of Gilles Tremblay’s Envol – Allelulia for solo flute, the evocative prelude to his larger work, Vêpres de la Vierge, written in 1986 in honour of the 850th anniversary of Notre Dame in Paris. In his search for an ultimate sonority, Tremblay explores the flute’s alter ego – its “shadow”. Envol is rapturous, meditative, fragile and wild; a rich soundscape that is sure to challenge your conception of the flute. Admission to all What Next Festival events is PWYC (pay what you can) at the door.
